Frightful Fridays! Ioun Raven

It’s not quite Friday, but 6 PM EDT on a Saturday is close and still definitely a high-visibility time for blog entries (I may not know what I’m doing with respect to timing these). This go round features a former familiar that seeks to make other familiars former familiars. It enjoys ioun stones per a raven’s predilection for shiny baubles, but it can do a lot more with them than take them back to the nest.

I hope you enjoy the ioun raven. See you again with another monster!

This corvid has dark purple feathers and a crimson beak. Several stones, one of which appears more valuable than the others, spin around the bird.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Create Ioun Stone (Sp)
As a standard action that inflicts 5 points of damage to the ioun raven, the raven can create a dull gray ioun stone, which immediately orbits around it. The raven can’t have more than 5 such ioun stones at once. This is a conjuration, creation effect.
Explode Ioun Stone (Sp) The raven can target a location within 60 feet of it with one of its orbiting ioun stones as a standard action. The stone explodes in a 20-foot-radius spread, dealing 4d6 points of force damage to all creatures in the area (DC 18 Reflex half). If the raven uses something other than a dull gray ioun stone, the damage increases to 12d6. The save DC is Charisma-based.
Liberate Familiar (Su) As a standard action, the ioun raven targets a familiar within 30 feet of it. The creature must succeed on a DC 18 Will save (using its base save bonus instead of its master’s) or the link between the familiar and its master is severed. The former master can take a standard action to reestablish the link with a successful DC 18 caster level check. If the link remains severed for 1 minute, it becomes permanent, requiring the former master to complete the ritual to reacquire a familiar. The save and caster level check DCs are Charisma-based.

Ioun ravens are former familiars who broke free of the bond between themselves and their masters. Additionally, they absconded with several magical baubles when they became unfettered. While the ravens like any gem or other shiny object of power, they most prefer ioun stones for portability, freeing the ravens from having to carry an item in their beaks or talons.

Also known as bondbreaker ravens, the birds seek to free others from what they view as lives of bondage. However, the ravens never ask familiars if they desire freedom before psychically snapping the connection between familiar and master. They never expect gratitude from those they have liberated, mostly because the animals they release immediately revert to ordinary specimens.

Ioun ravens sometimes take on the role of familiar so they can gain access to powerful wizards’ lairs, from which they can enhance their own wealth of arcane treasures. An ioun raven lair contains several magic items they have stolen and has several ravens guarding it.

Owing to the magic infusing them, ioun ravens typically live up to 120 years. Older specimens gain access to more powerful ioun stones, and their plumage transitions to a pale violet.

Explode Aeon Stone [two-actions] (arcane, evocation, force) The raven launches an aeon stone up to 60 feet. The stone explodes dealing 4d6 force damage (DC 26 basic Reflex save) to all creatures in a 20-foot-radius spread. If the raven uses something other than a dull gray aeon stone, the damage increases to 8d6.
Liberate Familiar [two-actions] (arcane, mental) The aeon raven targets a single familiar within 30 feet. That creature must attempt DC 26 Will save with a –2 status penalty.
Critical Success The target is unaffected and immune to the raven’s Liberate Familiar for 24 hours.
   Success The target is unaffected.
Failure The target’s bond to its master is severed for 1 minute.
Critical Failure The target’s bond to its master is permanently severed.
Steal Item [one-action] The aeon raven attempts to Steal one item of negligible Bulk from a creature, even if the creature is in combat, though the object still must not be one that is actively in use (unless the item is an aeon stone). If it succeeds, it carries the object in its beak, or, if the object is an aeon stone, the stone immediately orbits the raven.

Magic Resistance. The ioun raven has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions
——————–

Multiattack. The ioun raven makes two attacks: one with its beak and one with its talons. The raven can use Steal Item in place of one of its melee attacks.

Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 6 (1d4 + 4) slashing damage

Create Ioun Stone. If it has fewer than 5 dull gray ioun stones, the ioun raven creates a new dull gray ioun stone. It takes 5 psychic damage, and its hp maximum is reduced by an equal amount. This reduction lasts until the raven finishes a long rest.
An ioun raven typically starts an encounter with an ioun stone of protection and 5 dull gray ioun stones.

Explode Ioun Stone. The ioun raven throws an ioun stone up to a point it can see within 60 feet of it, and the stone detonates in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point. Each creature in the area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 21 (6d6) force damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If the ioun stone is something other than a dull gray stone, the damage increases to 42 (12d6).

Liberate Familiar. The ioun raven attempts to sever the link between a familiar within 30 feet of it and the familiar’s master. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Charisma saving throw, or the familiar is treated as if it was temporarily dismissed for 1 minute. If the saving throw is failed by 5 or more, the familiar is dismissed forever.

Steal Item. The ioun raven makes a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check against an adjacent target’s Armor Class to steal a Tiny object from the target. If the object is an ioun stone, the raven has advantage on its check.
